Joaquin Phoenix: Off His Rocker or a Brilliant Genius?

joaquin-phoenixWhat can we learn from Joaquin Phoenix?  He’s been in the news a lot lately.  Not exclusively for his upcoming movie, Two Lovers, but for making an appearance in a Las Vegas club on February 5, 2009 as a rap artist.

That’s right.  Mr. Phoenix announced that he will leave the show business world of acting behind to pursue a career as a rap artist.  He also claims that he has started recording his first hip-hop album.

To add more “What The?!” to the mix, Joaquin Phoenix made an appearance on Letterman last night (Feb. 11) to promote his latest movie co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow.  However, Joaquin as we know him didn’t quite show up.  He is already a week into his lifestyle as a rap artist and boy did his interview with Letterman suggest exactly that.

How Much Will Hollywood Pay You As An Actor?

cha-chingThe title of this article is phrased in the form of a question for a very specific reason.  It’s helpful to know that when working in Hollywood as an actor, the amount you will receive for starring in this summer’s blockbuster is directly related to how much money you command at the box office.

That is, your track record.  How profitable are the movies you’ve made in the past?  It’s expensive to make a Hollywood movie.  The big ones can run over $100million (yes, that’s one hundred million!) and the producers and studios want to make sure that they have a chance to make their money back once the movie comes out.

How do they make their money back?  Through box office ticket sales, DVD rentals and sales and merchandising.

Naturally, the more money your movies make through those avenues, the more money you will command.  See the correlation?
